PC & Network Without Internet
The key insight
Your home network (LAN/Wi-Fi) works completely without internet — the router only needs power. All devices on the same Wi-Fi can still talk to each other: exchange files, print, use local AI, access this offline base together.
Router on backup power
Routers only use ~10–15 W → on a 1000 Wh power station one runs for 2–3 days. Worthwhile if several devices need to communicate.
Making this offline base available throughout the house
Option A — simple: copy the folder to a USB stick and distribute it to every device. START-HIER.html works everywhere with a double-click.
Option B — network share (Windows):
1. Right-click the KeinInternet folder → Properties → Sharing → Share
2. Other PCs: File Explorer → \\<PC-NAME>\KeinInternet
Option C — mini web server (if Python is installed):
cd "<path to your KeinInternet folder>"
python -m http.server 8080
Example path: C:\KeinInternet. Other devices (phones too!): browser → http://<IP-of-the-PC>:8080/START-HIER.html
Find the IP address: ipconfig → IPv4 address. Confirm the firewall prompt with "Allow" — only on your own, trusted network, because this makes the whole folder (including your settings in config\) readable by everyone on the Wi-Fi.
Offline Wikipedia for the whole Wi-Fi network: KIWIX-SERVER-START.bat (see 15-kiwix-wikipedia.md).
Windows without internet — what works and what doesn't
Still works: everything local — Office, files, installed programs, local AI, games without an online requirement, printing on the LAN.
Doesn't work / problems: cloud files that are only "available online" (OneDrive placeholders!), streaming, programs with online licence checks; signing in to Windows with a Microsoft account can cause problems after a long time (create a local account as a backup!).
Prepare now:
- [ ] OneDrive/cloud folders: set important files to "Always keep on this device"
- [ ] Create a local Windows account with a password as a second login
- [ ] Back up installers of important programs offline (see 12-download-checkliste.md)
- [ ] Export your password manager database locally/keep it synchronised
Time & co.
Without a time server (NTP) the PC clock drifts minimally — doesn't matter. Phones keep time via GPS (works without internet!).
GPS & offline maps
GPS always works without internet — only the maps are missing. Download offline maps beforehand (Google Maps offline areas or Organic Maps/OsmAnd, see the download checklist).
Troubleshooting the LAN without internet
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| "No internet" warning, Wi-Fi disconnects | Ignore the warning / "Connect anyway"; disable automatic disconnection when there is no internet in the Wi-Fi options |
| Devices can't see each other | Same Wi-Fi? Set the network profile to "Private" (Windows) |
| Share asks for a password | Use the Windows login details of the sharing PC |
| Phone browser can't find the server | Use http:// (not https://), type the IP address instead of the name |
